Principal Digital Designer

Job Profile

As our new Principal Digital Designer, you will be part of a dynamic and innovative management, engineering and development consultancy working on projects across various areas. Wholly independent and employee owned, we have staff worldwide working in sectors including transport, energy, buildings, water and advisory.

Job Description

Your roll will see you develop, train, lead and inspire the structural modelling team for Mott MacDonald in New Zealand. We describe our team as a modelling team and not a ‘Revit’ team or a ‘BIM’ team. This is because although Revit is one of the primary modelling tools, the team will use many others. BIM is also a process of design that the team employs and promotes, but the team is also involved in the development of the digital engineering workflow, advanced geometry, parametric processes and imagery.

You will act as a representative of the business, engaging with architects and other key collaborators and connecting with other discipline leaders from across the Group to share knowledge and ideas, acting not just as a lead role on assigned projects but also taking a reviewing and mentoring role of other technicians and their work.

Other duties include:

•Working with other staff in the region, providing leadership and direction in Digital Engineering and coordinating the implementation and ongoing development (technology, policy, process and people)
•Represent Mott MacDonald externally with an involvement in business development and marketing
•Provide continuous assessments of evolving Digital Engineering capability against current trends in the industry to ensure the business objectives are aligned with our clients needs
•Act as the lead modelling technician on projects and as a designated Client contact regarding BIM on projects
•Participate in Project PIM set-up, assisting in the creation of BIM Execution Plans.
•Manage project implementation (Technology, Policy, Process and People) and overseeing all BIM related activities and specific standards relating to Projects are followed.
•Responsible for checking the quality and accuracy of own and others’ work
•Monitor and ensure BIM Execution plan is updated and Project standards are adhered to by project team.
•Be able to interpret Architectural drawings and produce Structural models, using appropriate software
•Ability to model, draw and detail structural elements and create custom families where necessary, producing drawings, schedules and visualisations from 3D models for use in technical reports, presentations and marketing material
•Use parametric procedures to generate adaptive model geometry in collaboration with other designers
•Collaborate with other disciplines and perform clash analysis to ensure
coordination of the Structural models throughout the project
•Manage QA/QC review process to ensure that all models comply with Company/Project QA/QC requirements
•Maintain Project specific library of families and develop new families as required along with other Project specific content
•Handle contract administration, document issues and document management

Candidate Specification

What we like to see in candidates:

•A desire to delight
•Self-motivation, a willingness to learn, adapt and excel
•A quality portfolio of work that the candidates are proud to describe. A real understanding of the ‘story’ of these projects and how they added value
•Varied building engineering project experience using multiple materials
•Highly skilled in modelling and an ability to mentor others
•Understanding of PAS 1192 and other associated documents
•Industry relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification; Professional Degree Preferred
•Minimum 10 years’ experience in the Building Engineering sector with at least 6 years of Modelling / BIM / Revit experience

In turn you’ll be working on significant projects that shape the communities in which we live.

There's not time like present to make a change.
