Civil engineer - Highways

Job Profile

Our Liverpool highways team is currently growing a highly skilled and customer focused team to respond to an increasing number of secured highway schemes and potential future opportunities in the north west. We operate from our newly refurbished office in the Liver Building.

We are seeking an engineer to work within our existing team on a range of exiting projects including Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR), Warrington East phase 3, Area 10 support, A494 Deeside Link, A483 Wrexham Road improvements.

To be successful you will ideally be near chartered (not mandatory), be able to demonstrate approximately 5 years of highways and highway drainage experience and be technically proficient in, for example, alignment design to DMRB, pavement design, VRS, sign design and highway drainage modelling. You should also be comfortable mentoring graduate team members.

Job Description

As an engineer based in Liverpool, you will be expected to demonstrate technical responsibilities working on highways projects around the North West and supporting our other North West highways teams. The role carries a some autonomy.

You will have responsibility for:-
  • Promoting and ensuring adherence to our health & safety policy and procedures
  • Managing discrete highway design packages and working in multi-disciplinary design teams
  • Mentoring graduates and responding to clients through highway approval processes, including discharge of planning conditions related to highways
  • Showing potential for technical leadership
  • Showing awareness of tasks, programme and budgets
  • Presenting technical advice to clients and stakeholders in conjunction with project managers.
  • Assisting senior project managers on major schemes and business development.
  • Motivation and performance of junior staff
  • Proactively liaising with and reporting to the line manager and/or project manager/principal.

Candidate Specification

You will be expected to have/be:-
  • A demonstrable track record of highways and highway drainage design
  • Proven experience in team working
  • Near chartered engineer (incorporated potentially)
  • Technically astute and able to demonstrate mentoring graduates.
  • Some commercial awareness, financial and technical reporting ability.
  • Able to interpret client requirements to produce a sound engineering proposal
  • Knowledge of highway (DMRB) and drainage (Sewers for Adoption) standards
  • A confident communicator with good verbal and written skills
  • Some ability to assist in developing the business
  • Some knowledge of contract preparation and procurement
