Our environment team provides a wide range of specialist environmental support to internal and external clients and has an increasing workload across infrastructure and development sectors. Due to continuous growth, we now have a need for an experienced ecologist to join our expanding team in Birmingham, based within city centre, close to New Street Station, Grand Central and the Bullring

Based in Birmingham you will be working across the region and nationally and will be supporting not just delivery of nationally important schemes such as HS2, but also smaller schemes that are important to local communities like new schools, better sports clubs, and housing projects. Our Birmingham team are engaged in provision of support to both Public and Private sector clients and we can offer a genuine variety of work, including opportunities in the road and water sectors, with local authorities, energy sector and developers.

This mix of projects will give you the opportunity to develop in new ways, and you will be part of helping us achieve our growth and realise your potential, by driving forward our services to internal and external clients and helping to develop new business for the team.

Job Description

You will be part of a dynamic global ecology practice across Mott MacDonald, who work collaboratively to deliver ecological support and to ensure the development of its members. You will also be part of our Birmingham office community, an increasingly diverse work place that brings together professionals from across disciplines to develop client and people centred solutions to the problems we face, with a focus on integrity and honesty in everything we do.

Be part of a multi-disciplinary team
You will work within a multi-disciplinary team on a wide range of projects across multiple sectors (power, transport, water, urban development). You will be part of a dynamic ecology practice who work collaboratively to deliver ecological support, working together to ensure the development of its members.

Be part of growth
This role will suit an outgoing individual who wants to be part of growth within the business in this specialist area and help support delivery of ecological consultancy and mitigation works in a fast moving, client focussed commercial environment.

Work on a range of projects
You will be office based however there will be a requirement to undertake site surveys and attend client meetings. In addition, there may be a need for general ecological support to a range of projects within an environmental team, working closely with other disciplines to ensure ecological objectives for projects are delivered successfully, within budget and to programme.

Candidate Specification

Your experience should be a good mixture of the following:
  • Degree in ecology/biology or directly related subject (minimum of 2.1 classification), with further, post-graduate, qualifications desirable
  • Full Member of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, with relevant chartership advantageous
  • Personal conservation licence for at least one protected species; and, experience of obtaining a variety of protected species licences and liaising with regulatory bodies to negotiate and obtain consents
  • Relevant experience connected with major infrastructure schemes
  • Strong report writing skills, attention to detail and ability to write concise reports
  • Experience in developing scope of work for environmental studies including ESIA and EIA, IFC guidelines and similar assessments
  • Excellent experience in the UK ecological consultancy market, with a strong external-facing, client-orientated approach
  • Experience in planning, assisting and delivering surveys to fulfil project requirements related to EIA, HRA etc.
  • Experience in preparation and writing ecological sections of environmental impact assessments ensuring that legislative guidelines are met
  • Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel and undertake fieldwork in the UK and internationally
  • Knowledge of wildlife legislation, including planning process and EIA assessments
  • Ability to work independently, take the initiative, make robust, defensible decisions and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs
