Our Economic and Social Development team contains specialists in economic development, social development, GIS and intelligent analytics, strategic planning and infrastructure funding and policy.
We apply a depth of insight to a broad range of projects including some of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK, international development projects and a mix of projects for different public and private clients throughout the British Isles where we assist in the advancement of infrastructure, physical development and policy.

Examples of our Economic and Social Development clients and project portfolio includes: HS2, Transport for London, the Department for Transport, NHS England, Unilever, MerseyTravel, Transport for Greater Manchester, Transport for the North, Highways England, Network Rail, World Bank, EBRD, EIB, BIS/DCLG, Welsh Government and local authorities and property developers throughout the UK.

The 36-strong team is based in Mott MacDonald offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool.
A core focus for us is transport and we are situated within Mott MacDonald’s wider Transportation business.

Job Description

In recent years, a strong growth area for our business has been in providing advisory services to clients on how they can fund their desired infrastructure investments and wider built environment projects.

This work has been particularly focused in the transport sector, where we have developed a range of cutting-edge approaches to raising funding for major schemes through a combination of development value capture, tax-increment financing and incremental user revenues, in the context of ongoing public-sector austerity.

We are now looking to recruit a senior / principal consultant to drive forward our infrastructure funding advisory business, working closely with the senior management of the Economic and Social Development team.

In this role you will:

Manage projects,
Work directly where required with clients
Working to develop future opportunities
Support knowledge transfer both within the team and across Mott MacDonald more widely

Candidate Specification

The ideal candidate is likely to come from a background working on infrastructure funding, financing and/or wider policy issues in government or a consultancy environment. They would be expected to be numerate and capable of developing robust, user-friendly financial models suitable for public-sector business cases.
Required experience, skills and capabilities in the successful candidate will include:
  • Understanding of key infrastructure funding approaches, particularly in a UK context, including value capture, grant funding, tax-increment financing, user revenues etc.
  • Experience of developing financial forecasting models, sourcing inputs and providing management with an analysis of key outputs from these models.
  • Understanding and application of modelling best practice.
  • Highly numerate with strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain technical subjects to non-technical audiences, including to local authority officers and Members and civil servants.
  • Experience of working across different transport modes – road, rail, freight, aviation, mass rapid transit, public transport, interchanges, transit oriented development – would be an advantage.
  • Experience of working on development and regeneration projects where transport is an enabler of development would be an advantage.
  • Project management skills ideally developed in a multi-disciplinary consultancy environment.
  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate qualifications in economics, finance or related subjects (e.g. geography, urban planning, mathematics).
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
