Seasonal field ecologist - Bat/Badger surveys

Job Profile

We require experienced field ecologists with bat (dusk to dawn mainly) survey skills to provide temporary support during the field survey season for 2017. We are offering a fixed term role staring ASAP until November 2017 for experienced field ecologists.
Our ecology teams are generally based in Croydon & Southampton, however for the field ecologist role you will be primarily based on site in Somerset. We will be providing accommodation during weekdays located near the survey areas with this role.

As an ecologist you will primarily be focused on undertaking bat emergence and re-entry surveys, bat activity transect surveys and deployment and collection of automated static detectors. You will need experience of dusk to dawn bat surveys, would be required in this role. However, the role may also include undertaking other protected species surveys as and when required. In addition we will also be conducting badger field surveys.

Our ecology team provides a wide range of specialist environmental/ecology support to internal and external clients and has an increasing workload within both the transportation and development sectors. The ecology team is currently looking to expand to meet its current and future commitments within the transportation, water and power sectors.

Job Description

Seasonal consultant field ecologist to provide temporary support to the ecology team based out of the Southampton or Croydon offices. Largely site based, ability to travel and drive essential.

Candidate Specification

For the field ecologist role you should have a strong combination of the following:
  • Relevant degree in ecology or directly related subject
  • Proven experience of protected species, in particular bats (dusk to dawn mainly)
  • Relevant consultancy experience as an ecologist, including undertaking emergence/re-entry surveys, bat activity transect surveys and automated/static detector surveys
  • Experience in the use of hand-held bat detectors and recorders is required
  • Experience in the setup and deployment of automated/static detectors is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of the requirements of documents such as BCT Bat Survey Guidelines, WebTAG and DMRB
  • Some experience of badger surveys
  • Strong report writing skills relating to ecological surveys
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Proficient in Word and Excel
  • Must have a driving licence and when required be prepared to work/travel outside working hours
If you have a bat licence or other EPS license it would be highly desirable
