Senior Flood Modeller / Flood Risk Specialist

Job Profile

We are looking for a Senior hydraulic modeller/Flood risk consultant, to join our Cardiff or Bristol office.

This opportunity has resulted from the continued demand for our services including our appointment to the Environment Agency’s Project Delivery Unit (PDU1) in the South West of England, the Welsh Government’s NPS Framework (including Lot 5 - Flood Risk Mapping, Modelling and Analysis, and Lot 6 - Water Management), and opportunities in the Republic of Ireland.

Our flood risk management projects range from the strategic broad scale to the detailed design of multi-million-pound flood schemes, offering huge diversity and excellent opportunities for technical development and career progression.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and professionally qualified hydraulic modeller to work from either our Cardiff or Bristol offices within our flood risk management team.

The role will be challenging, demanding, varied and offer fantastic opportunities for skill set and career development.
You will work closely with our clients and teams of engineers and technical specialists to deliver a wide range of fluvial, coastal, surface water or drainage modelling to inform and deliver appraisal and design projects across the UK.
The role will also provide the opportunity to gain experience in economic assessment and project appraisal, or use existing skills should you already be proficient.
There is also the opportunity to manage projects locally (dependent on experience) and take on the wider responsibilities associated with a Team Leader role in the future, as the team grows.

Candidate Specification

The essentials
  • Relevant degree-level qualifications (e.g. hydrology, geography, mathematics, civil engineering, or other related disciplines).
  • At least 3 years professional experience working in the UK and in using recognised flood modelling packages such as ISIS/Flood Modeller, ESTRY, TUFLOW is essential.
  • Applicants should be proficient in the use of GIS using ArcGIS and MapInfo software.
  • Chartered status is very important to us and candidates should ideally be chartered with an appropriate institution or at a minimum working towards chartership in the immediate future.
  • Clear, honest and effective communication skills.
  • Systematic logical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work effectively to meet client needs and deadlines both independently and as part of a team

Other non-essential / Beneficial experience
  • Knowledge and experience of competing economic assessment using the MCM and applying FCERM AG / 5CM.
  • Coastal modelling, surface water and drainage modelling experience.
  • Use of FEH based methods to produce flood hydrology.
  • Hydraulic assessment and design using theoretical / empirical approaches.
  • Project management.
  • Team development and leadership.
  • Tender preparation.
  • Water modelling software packages such as MIKE or Infoworks
  • Survey management.
  • Design of SuDS and conventional drainage systems.
  • Developing scripts using Python.
  • Producing or contributing to Flood Risk Assessments / Flooding Consequences Assessments.
