Graduate Civil Engineer - Materials

Job Profile

Are you an engineer with an interest in civil engineering materials - mostly concrete and steel?
Would you like to become involved with the development of concrete or materials specifications for new structures, the condition assessment of existing structures including life predictions, and the development of remediation strategies including the design of cathodic protection systems to control corrosion?
If you have an MSc or PhD and a desire to develop your career in the field of durability and sustainability of materials, this could be for you.

You would be based in Bristol by the waterfront, based close to the station and city centre.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate, and take positive steps to create an inclusive culture.

  • Evaluating the requirements and potential performance of materials for use in new structures and selecting and specifying materials that can meet these requirements.
  • Planning and carrying out investigations to evaluate the current condition, performance and residual life of a wide range of existing structures.
  • Developing protection, maintenance and repair strategies.
  • Carrying out research into new materials and to support novel and innovative applications of established materials and techniques.

The role is open for applicants from graduate level with about 2 years of experience to nearly chartered status with relevant working experience focusing on materials. Successful candidates are likely to have the following characteristics:
  • Strong academic record, engineering/materials (or similar relevant) degree qualified. Additional qualifications such as PhD, MSc or equivalent in the field of materials are highly beneficial.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience of one or more of the commonly used construction materials (concrete and cementitious materials, metals, aggregates, masonry and building stone, coatings).
  • Knowledge of how these materials are used and perform in new and existing structures, and on their assessment, protection and repair.
  • The drive to continuously learn and enhance the understanding of various materials.
  • The ability to approach and solve problems in a logical manner.
  • The enthusiasm and flexibility to take on new challenges and, when necessary, to respond by developing and confidently applying new knowledge outside existing specialist fields.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to clearly summarise and communicate complex technical information in reports, meetings and presentations, to suit both technical and non-technical audiences.
