Deputy Geotechnics Practice Leader

Job Description

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist other senior Mott MacDonald staff in expanding our geotechnical practice with an emphasis in California and the west coast.
  • Ability to develop new and existing client relationships to enhance our market exposure and reputation.
  • Manage professional staff who would perform geotechnical investigations, analysis, and field engineering monitoring services.
  • Prepare and/or review written geotechnical reports and narratives.
  • Coordinate and review work to be performed by specialty geotechnical subconsultants and subcontractors.
  • Procure, manage and review a broad range of geotechnical laboratory testing, field investigation and instrumentation programs.
  • Compile and evaluate information obtained from geotechnical laboratory testing, field investigation and instrumentation programs.
  • Manage, review and oversee, or perform geotechnical analysis addressing: slope stability, settlement and consolidation, seismic response, surcharge and ground improvement, shallow foundations (mats and footings), drilled piers; and, pile design (compressive, lateral and uplift capacities).

Candidate Specification

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering plus a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering is required.
    A PhD in Geotechnical Engineering with focus on seismic issues a plus.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in California, GE preferred. Registration in additional states a plus.
  • Fifteen to Twenty years of professional experience with a minimum of five years of experience with projects located in California and five years of management experience.
  • A proven track record managing and developing junior staff and performing all facets of business development; from client engagement, proposals, contracting and managing of the business development process.

  • Proven ability to manage geotechnical projects with field, laboratory, and geotechnical engineering components.
  • Experience preparing geotechnical reports and reviewing written product prepared by others.
  • Demonstrated experience with computer programs including LPILE, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, PLAXIS or other FEM software, AutoCAD, gINT and SHAKE 3D. Exposure to structural analysis programs such as STAAD or SAP2000 is a plus.
  • Demonstrated design and construction experience with shallow and deep foundations, seismic design issues, slope stability, earthworks and excavation support systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment.
  • Occasional field work may be required.
  • Ability to travel both regionally and nationally.
  • Additionally, a certificate documenting OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training is a plus.
