Senior / Marine ecologist

Job Profile

Ecological systems, clearly fundamental to the natural environment, are increasingly recognised for their social, health and economic benefits, but remain under threat from human activities. The plight of the marine environment is coming into increasingly sharp focus, partly through our efforts; in this context we are keen to engage a marine ecologist to bolster our team in Cambridge. This position can be offered on either a full-time or a part-time basis.

Job Description

You will be part a large team of ecologists and other environmental staff, working across a wide range of projects and sectors (including power, transport, oil & gas and maritime), ensuring that ecological objectives for projects are delivered successfully, within budget and to programme.

Candidate Specification

  • Degree in marine biology, or directly related subject (minimum of 2.1 classification)
  • Full, clean driving licence; willing to travel to undertake fieldwork in the UK and internationally
  • Excellent report-writing skills and attention to detail
  • Experience in developing scope-of-work for marine environmental studies, including ESIA and EIA, IFC guidelines, and similar assessments
  • Experience in planning, assisting and delivering coastal field-based marine surveys to fulfil project requirements related to EIA, HRA etc.
  • Experience in preparing and writing ecological sections of EIAs, ensuring that legislative guidelines are met
  • Knowledge of wildlife legislation, including planning process and EIAs
  • Ability to work independently, take the initiative, make robust, defensible decisions, and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs
  • Basic GIS skills

Desirable:

  • Masters degree in one of the disciplines mentioned above, or in biodiversity conservation
  • Proven track-record in management of sub-consultants
  • Membership of a professional organisation
  • Experience of the use of marine environmental monitoring technologies, such as Smart buoys, UAV surveys, Autonomous systems
  • Sea survival training certificate
  • Current ENG Marine medical
