Principal civil maritime engineer

Job Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated senior/principal maritime engineer to join our growing maritime team in Scotland, where we are providing project management, design and supervisory services to a range of private and public sector clients on a variety of maritime projects, together with supporting our power, water and flooding teams on a range of projects.

In addition across Mott MacDonald we are growing and developing our maritime business on a global basis. As a result there will be opportunities to provide civil / structural input to projects in other regions.

Recent and current projects include a ferry berth extension, marina projects, flood alleviation schemes, coast protection works, linkspan works, outfall works and cooling water intake/outfall studies.

Job Description

As an experienced technical member of staff, reporting to our Head of Maritime, Scotland, you will possess and maintain a high standard of technical capability required to deliver projects within the sector and to guide and lead less experienced staff on technical aspects of projects.

You will collaborate with colleagues in a constructive manner on projects, sharing knowledge freely. Mott MacDonald has established a comprehensive set of quality management, health and safety and environmental management procedures. You will be required to conform to these procedures and, as a professional you are expected to role model their proper implementation.

In your role it is likely that you will be required to contribute to the delivery and/or management of a number projects concurrently. In doing so, you will be required to plan your work in a structured manner using the appropriate planning tools and collaborate with colleagues in addressing the peaks and troughs in resource demand taking account of priorities on their projects as well as your own. Projects rarely go according to plan and, you will be expected to track and monitor performance against baseline and work constructively to recover and bring work packages and / or projects to a successful outcome to meet or beat targeted profit, deadlines and output quality

You will contribute to bidding and winning work, using your knowledge of clients and your understanding of the technical requirements and risks associated with the prospects. You will be expected to understand and define key selling points and added value within bids which will help to differentiate the service that Mott MacDonald will offer.

As part of the bidding process you will be required to assist with the calculation of fees, taking account of commercial risks and opportunities and present the commercial case, internally before submitting the offer. You will be required to follow the standard processes, established within Mott MacDonald for undertaking bids

Candidate Specification

In terms of relevant experience and qualifications:
  • Degree qualified and a chartered member of a relevant institution e.g. MICE;
  • In depth experience of the design of port and maritime facilities
  • Experienced in the preparation of specifications and contract documentation;
  • Experienced in commission management and leading design teams;
  • Knowledge of and some experience of contract administration beneficial;
  • Experience of the design of coastal structures would be advantageous
  • A successful history of undertaking client facing roles;
  • A successful history of developing new client relationships and securing new business would be advantageous;
In terms of personal skills and attributes:
  • Ability to lead project teams and work well collaboratively, both internally and with clients and external partners;
  • Willingness to mentor, manage and develop the skills of other members of the team;
  • Willingness to engage with the broader group to seek guidance, share best practice etc.
  • Enthusiasm and aptitude at dealing with interfaces, including technical, commercial / contractual, and personal / stakeholder
  • A good communicator verbally, and precise and clear in written / reporting work
  • Well organised, with strong planning and management skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Capable of provide high levels of support to clients
