Senior Acoustic Engineer

Job Profile

We require an experienced senior acoustic engineer to support an expanding project portfolio of architectural and environmental acoustic projects including a number of landmark buildings and infrastructure projects. You will be collaborating with a large professional body of talented acoustic engineers working on a wide array of projects mainly in the UK, some may have an international focus. We actively support career, capability and skills development. The role can be based in one of the following locations: Altrincham, Birmingham, Bristol, Croydon, or Southampton.

Acoustics affects many aspects of our daily lives, including the comfort and performance of buildings for education, healthcare, arts, business or residential. Mott MacDonald helps clients manage acoustics, noise and vibration in their buildings in the residential, commercial, transport, education and health, municipal, sports and leisure and performing arts sectors. We also undertake noise and vibration impact assessment for transportation schemes such as road and rail.

Our services include:
  • Modelling, prediction, investigation and design services to minimise noise and vibration
  • Assessment and appraisal of noise and vibration impact of infrastructure schemes at all stages
  • Facade design to control external noise intrusion
  • Architectural acoustic design to optimise acoustic comfort
  • Electro-acoustic design to enhance intelligibility of life safety communication systems
Where appropriate these services include noise and vibration surveys at sites throughout the UK.
We also assist with all stages of the procurement process encompassing initial concept, design delivery, planning, procurement and construction, assessment and mitigation of noise and vibration in new build and refurbishment, remedial works and expert witness.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be required to assist with:
  • Calculation, prediction and assessment of noise and vibration associated with transportation, power and en-ergy, utilities, buildings
  • Directing and undertaking noise and vibration measurement surveys
  • Calculation, prediction, assessment and mitigation of noise and vibration from civil engineering construction, industrial sites and maintenance operations
  • Calculation and assessment of buildings acoustics
  • Preparation of noise input to environmental assessments
  • Preparation of reports
  • Supervision of junior staff
  • Business development activities
  • Project management

Candidate Specification

We are looking for an experienced individual who wants to develop their career by joining our growing acoustics team and to contribute to some of the most exciting buildings, highways and transportation infrastructure projects in the UK.

Your experience/qualifications are expected to include:
  • Degree or similar in acoustics/vibration related field
  • Proven technical ability in terms of problem solving and analytical thinking
  • Ability to manage time, resources and projects effectively
  • Full membership of the IOA
  • Working in an engineering consultancy
  • Transport and/or buildings acoustics
  • Multi-disciplinary environment
  • Commitment to CPD
  • Willing and able to work within team environment and involve others where necessary
  • Supervision and mentoring of junior staff
  • Experience in developing relationships with clients
  • Ability to write technical reports
Essential competencies / skills:
  • Acoustic modelling (e.g. CadnaA or NoiseMap)
  • Noise surveys
  • Report writing
  • Use of MS Word and Excel
  • Presentation of complex acoustic issues to non-specialists at project and client meetings and workshops
  • Driving licence
Desirable academic, professional qualifications and experience:
Experience in the measurement and analysis of structural and ground-borne vibration
Previous use and/or current skills in the use of CATT acoustic modelling software (or similar)
Familiarity with DMRB, CRTN, CRN and British and ISO acoustics standards

Desirable competencies / skills:
Use of GIS software
Public exhibition/inquiry/expert witness
Familiar with acoustic requirements of complex building projects
Understanding of project management requirements in a multi-disciplinary consultancy
