Biofuel plant and field

Combining in-depth knowledge of biofuel technologies with experience of the market, developers and lenders, Mott MacDonald has a competitive edge in working with biofuels.

Mott MacDonald has a leading track record in biofuels with detailed understanding of production projects, processing requirements, the analysis of potential feedstocks, and key commercial drivers.

The EU defines biofuels as a "liquid or gaseous fuel for transport produced from biomass" (organic material). The most common biofuels include bioethanol, which is made from sugar and starch crops, and biodiesel, which is produced from natural oils and fats. Vegetable oils and other liquid biomass can also be used as biofuels without modification for power generation.

The production of higher carbon containing alcohols for use as biofuels – such as bio-butanol – may be increasingly seen in the future.

As biofuel is derived from organic materials (plants), energy from sustainable biofuels aims to be carbon neutral. This means that carbon released during the use of the fuel is reabsorbed and balanced by the carbon absorbed by new plant growth. Plants can then be harvested to make the next batch of fuel.

Carbon-neutral fuels lead to no net increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels – unlike fossil fuels, which return carbon that was stored beneath the surface for millions of years back into the atmosphere. Biofuels provide a much quicker carbon-neutral cycle compared to other fuel-burning processes and are less likely to increase atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases.

We have a leading track record in biofuels with detailed understanding of production projects, processing requirements, the analysis of potential feedstocks, and commercial drivers concerning project developers, lenders, and investors, including advisory services for implementing national policies about biofuel production and projects. We're familiar with environmental and permitting issues involved in projects and our experience has covered all the main elements within project development and regulations.

Our extensive project and client list lends weight to our reputation for quality, experience, expertise, and international reach.

Customer benefits

We have considerable knowledge of biofuel projects and their context within the renewable energy sector. The combined knowledge of these elements adds significant value for our customers as we are able to thoroughly identify and assess project risks at all levels and advise accordingly. Clients choose to implement biofuel projects in the hope of lowering their carbon footprint.
