The EU defines biofuels as a "liquid or gaseous fuel for transport produced from biomass" (organic material). The most common biofuels include bioethanol, which is made from sugar and starch crops, and biodiesel, which is produced from natural oils and fats. Vegetable oils and other liquid biomass can also be used as biofuels without modification for power generation.
The production of higher carbon containing alcohols for use as biofuels – such as bio-butanol – may be increasingly seen in the future.
As biofuel is derived from organic materials (plants), energy from sustainable biofuels aims to be carbon neutral. This means that carbon released during the use of the fuel is reabsorbed and balanced by the carbon absorbed by new plant growth. Plants can then be harvested to make the next batch of fuel.
Carbon-neutral fuels lead to no net increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels – unlike fossil fuels, which return carbon that was stored beneath the surface for millions of years back into the atmosphere. Biofuels provide a much quicker carbon-neutral cycle compared to other fuel-burning processes and are less likely to increase atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases.
