It is no easy task to become carbon neutral. Many have made the commitment. Some may say they have achieved it. But we are the first company in our class to be externally certified carbon neutral, globally. I am hugely proud.
What’s behind the headline?
As extreme weather and environmental events continue to show, we are in a state of climate emergency that requires rapid and concerted effort to bring under control. To prevent runaway climate change, global emissions must be cut to net-zero within a generation.
In the last decade we at Mott MacDonald have made great strides in reducing our own global emissions. We have reduced our individual carbon footprint by 45% per employee in the last five years and are on track to reduce the total figure by a further 25% by 2024. We will keep on driving the numbers down in line with the Science Based Targets initiative. But for now, and some time to come we, like all other organizations, continue to put carbon into the atmosphere. We must compensate for that — remove it from the global balance sheet.
Our in-house carbon team has gathered data on the carbon arising from every part of our business — covering every Mott MacDonald office and the work activities of every Mott MacDonald employee around the world. Our data gathering process and carbon data were independently scrutinized by the Carbon Trust and certified to ISO 14064, the international standard for carbon reporting.
With a robust measure of our global emissions, we have invested to remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere, making us carbon neutral. A large and diverse "carbon offsetting" industry already exists, but many offset projects do not perform as promised. We carried out painstaking due diligence to identify the right investment — one that will reliably capture the quantity of carbon specified and keep it permanently locked away. It is fantastic to report that the capture and sequestration project we selected is one that our own company has designed: the restoration of peatland in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Our carbon offsetting has also been independently checked, meaning that we are now certified to PAS 2060, the international standard for carbon neutrality.
We have become carbon neutral because, as an employee-owned business, we share our people’s values and act on their concerns. We have a responsibility to our families, friends, colleagues, and society. We believe in leading by example. We know that, to help others, we must have our own house in order.
We have become carbon neutral because we care.
