Transportation Planner/GIS Analyst

Job Description

Mott MacDonald (MM) is seeking a Transportation Planner I/ GIS Analyst to support our transportation client in San Jose, CA.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to general mapping and data analysis requests using ESRI or QGIS software.

  • Provide on-going maintenance and support for GeoCortex applications in Silverlight and HTML5 and ArcGIS desktop applications.

  • Automation of tasks using tools such as ModelBuilder for ArcGIS and Workflow in GeoCortex.

  • Manage the collection, quality control, and maintenance of data with a Global Positioning System (GPS) handheld device.

  • Manage data at the enterprise level to ensure data is current, accurate, well documented, and accessible throughout the agency for feature datasets such as bus routes, stops, landmarks, transit centers, light rail, facilities, land use, urban and transportation planning, etc.

  • Provide data Quality Analysis/Quality Control and distribution to both internal and external users, including regional, state and federal entities.

  • Provide software and technical support for internal GIS users throughout the agency.

  • Provide and assist with software installations; training; technical support and logging; registration and license administration; general GIS consultation.

  • Basemap management, maintenance, preparation and distribution to users and key transit urban and transportation planning systems throughout the agency.

  • Research planning literature to prepare abstracts and bibliographies.

  • Assist with planning studies or surveys as a team member or performs portions individually under close supervision.

  • Answer inquiries and disseminates information regarding transportation planning related issues.

  • Coordinate and serves as staff for transportation meetings; attends various transportation meetings as required.

  • Update and maintains planning databases and directories.

  • Prepare correspondence and reports.

  • Perform related duties as required.

Candidate Specification

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Environmental Science, Geography, Computer Science, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning or related field is required.
  • One to Three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in statistical analysis, mapping, spatial analysis, computer database applications, transit operations, or other analytical work is desirable. Training and experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems is essential.
  • Or any equivalent combination of training and experience, a Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Computer Science, or Geography is equivalent to one year.
Supplemental Information:
  • Knowledge in the use of geographic information systems, including spatial data management, maintenance, and accurate and artful map preparation.
  • Knowledge and experience using ESRI software or certificates demonstrating progressive skill sets and knowledge base.
  • Knowledge and experience using GeoCortex software for ArcGIS server.
  • Knowledge of research and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of basic aims, concepts, and principles of transportation planning.
  • Knowledge of common computer applications used in planning.
  • Ability to effectively combine multiple analytical tools, including database systems, GIS mapping and CADD generated drawings.
  • Ability to understand and implement work programs and multiple tasks and to elicit support and cooperation from other departments and staff from other jurisdictions.
  • Ability to organize work, prepare presentations, prioritize projects, meet deadlines, and coordinate and complete multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collect, tabulate and analyze data.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals, one-on-one or in a team context.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in written form.
  • Ability to interpret technical plans, blueprints, maps, and aerial photographs.
  • Ability to teach and communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical people.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with employees, supervisors and the general public, including those from culturally diverse backgrounds, the elderly, persons with disabilities and/or other vulnerable populations.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of statistical, spatial, and demographic analysis, and the ability to prepare clear and concise reports and accurate and artful map preparation.
