Mott MacDonald’s successful Power and Renewables International Development Team is increasing its capacity in Washington, D.C., and requires a Project Manager to support our growing business. We currently deliver a portfolio of clean energy projects in South Africa, Malawi, Pakistan and with USAID headquarters, and plan to expand our portfolio significantly.
Reporting to the Senior Director, the Project Manager will effectively support bid and proposal efforts and support management of clean energy, climate and water/sanitation projects in line with the objectives, timeframe and budgets laid down in the current proposals.
The successful candidate will be trained on and then expected to meet internal Mott MacDonald Business Management System and quality standards after. This role will also anticipate, plan, and share in the development of new project proposals.

Key business development responsibilities include:
  • Track procurements for potential business opportunities.
  • Carry out market research and positioning activities on specific prospects and general streams of work with a focus on USAID, USTDA and MCC.
  • Develop and interact with a wide network to obtain intelligence about new business opportunities.
  • Contribute to project proposals by meeting with potential partner organizations, recruiting personnel, and preparing proposal documents.
  • Support the Senior Director and his staff in preparing bidding documents.
  • With the management team, work to implement the business development strategy in the Africa, Global and Asia regions.
Key project management responsibilities include:
  • Oversee and coordinate internal and external project management controls while supporting implementation of several Mott MacDonald donor-funded projects.
  • Provide support to Mott MacDonald local and international staff to ensure project deliverables are completed in time and with the highest quality.
  • Report contract performance and progress. Training will be provided on Mott MacDonald Business Management Systems requirements.
  • Ensure the completion, accuracy, and timeliness of technical reports.
  • Initiate requests for and monitor subcontract and consultant agreements; and ensure the quality, timeliness, and technical performance of subcontractors and consultants. Review invoices for appropriateness and approve payment of invoices.
  • Maintain effective collaboration with clients and partner firms.
  • Create and manage internal project budgets in coordination with Mott MacDonald’s Commercial Team.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide management support to field-based teams to ensure quality, efficiency and compliance with project and company standards/policies.
  • Recruit, screen, and field long and short term international staff and consultants.
  • Assist with mobilization and other coordination for field-based employees and consultants.
  • Manage Power and Renewable Energy Portfolio internal SharePoint content.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to develop technical skills / knowledge as they arise on specific projects.
    This may include providing short-term technical assistance on active, overseas projects.

Candidate Specification

Required skills, qualifications, and experience:
  • 6 or more years of progressively responsible job-related professional-level experience in USAID or MCC-funded project management, implementation, in direct activity management, or in a closely related activity is required.
  • Experience working on field-based USAID clean energy and/or water and sanitation projects is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to assume management and leadership roles on active projects.
  • Proactive and able to exercise initiative and judgement.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in the English (both oral and written).
  • Strong financial acumen, and ability to work with a commercial team to generate internal and external budgets.
  • Experience monitoring budgets of a large contract, coordinating multiple tasks, adhering to project schedules, ensuring the quality and timeliness of contract deliverables, and collaborating with federal, state, and local agencies and offices.
  • High level of competency in MS Office, including MS Project.
  • BS/BA in engineering, economics, or a related field.
  • MA/MS/MBA highly preferred.
  • PMP highly preferred.
  • Experience working in a developing country highly preferred.
