Hydraulic modeller / Hydrologist

Job Profile

Our Edinburgh office is currently delivering work on the EXCEL, SEPA and Scottish Water frameworks and needs to grow. The Edinburgh office is a UK centre for excellence in urban flooding and as such, supports delivery of EA WEM framework ICM modelling and other global opportunities. Current projects include a study on the impacts of flooding in road networks for West Lothian Council, Stonehaven FPS, Scottish Water’s Bathgate and Linlithgow integrated catchment studies and redesigning Elgin’s Flood storage scheme to accommodate the new A96.

Our integrated river and wastewater modelling team is looking to recruit a Senior Hydraulic Modeller/ Hydrologist with experience working alongside specialist project teams in the preparation of modelling and flood analysis. We are particularly keen that the you have the skills to lead hydraulic modelling studies in the urban environment.
You would be expected to keep up to date with new developments in the industry to make decisions on modelling approaches required for the studies and provide training and advice to others across the globe on modelling techniques. This role is open on a full or part time basis.

Job Description

You will report directly to the Global River and Flooding Practice Lead in the Edinburgh office. The role will be challenging, demanding, varied and offer fantastic opportunities for skill set and career development. The focus of the role will be on technical delivery and training of others.

The key elements of the role are (but not limited to):

  • Determining the appropriate hydrological and hydraulic modelling approach
  • Specifying necessary survey for model data
  • Constructing and calibrating/verifying models
  • Analysing results from hydraulic models
  • Creating flood maps and other model outputs
  • Undertaking technical report writing
  • Be able to interact positively with both senior and junior staff alike and within the client environment
  • Be progressive, imaginative and enthusiastic in the work and strive to add value where possible for the benefit of the company and our clients

Candidate Specification

Essential requirements to be considered for the role:
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, GIS or similar
  • Strong IT skills and experience with GIS software packages, ESRI ArcGIS or MapInfo Professional
  • Ability to communicate and present to internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner, both written and verbally
  • A consultative approach to dealing with colleagues
  • Ability to analyse information and offer improved methodologies that provide efficiencies
  • Positive ‘can-do’ attitude, to working with colleagues

Desirable requirements to be considered for the role:
  • Masters in water related specialism
  • Experience in InfoWorks ICM
  • Experience in ISIS/TuFLOW/Flood Modeller
  • Experience with FEH methods
  • Ability to use database such as PostGRES
  • Ability to use QGIS
  • Ability to write tools and routines to provide efficiencies
  • Ability to write SQLs/ programme in various languages
  • Adaptable to working within different client environments/cultures
  • Knowledge of current hardware and processing technologies (e.g. GPU cards)
