MM is seeking a highly qualified Deputy Rail and Transit leader with an outstanding reputation in the US marketplace to lead the continuing growth of our industry leading Rail/Transit practice for our West Unit which is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. The practice portfolio includes a wide span of expertise in rail systems and infrastructure, including planning, design, design-build, construction support and management, condition and safety inspections and program management. Mott MacDonald is Practice orientated and the selected individual will have a significant role in the development, direction and growth of our rail and transit business.

As the Deputy Rail and Transit Practice Professional the successful candidates will represent Mott MacDonald in the Rail & Transit market sector, be aware of the opportunities and trends, support local managers with customer visits and technical discussions, and provide direction and input to proposals and presentations. They will also have a prominent role in professional associations and at conferences by actively participating on key committees and/ or presenting papers. They will promote the technical and business knowledge of the market sector to their staff and encourage them to also present papers and be active in the industry.
The successful candidates will be responsible for leading our team of rail and transit professionals in Southern California to increasing our capabilities and dedication to technical excellence, supporting our West Unit in the development of leads and contacts, winning and delivering work, building core competency within the practice, and developing and executing business initiatives.
The responsibility includes providing oversight and monitoring of all stages of a project life cycle including pre-award and post award coordination with internal and external clients and ensuring the deliverables are on time, within schedule, within budgetary parameters, and of the highest quality and to the client’s satisfaction, every time.
Candidate’s must have a demonstrated history of profitable and successful project management experience and the capability of being a team player and excellent communicator. In addition to the other qualities and qualification of the successful candidate the role will include recruiting, coaching, mentoring and nurturing of staff to develop and strengthen competency and technical expertise within the practice.
The successful candidates will join an existing experienced team as part of our West Unit with a specific focus on our Southwestern Division. Both the Unit and Division are headquartered in Los Angeles where we have a dedicated team of practice leaders in a number of market sectors who have significantly contributed to our success. These practice leaders provide the leadership for developing the business, professional excellence, enhance staff capabilities and competencies, resulting in effective and successful project delivery. They are recognized as North American leaders in their respective market sectors.
Each practice leader works in collaboration with Mott MacDonald’s offices to consistently deliver quality services to our growing client base. They also work in collaboration with other practices and Mott MacDonald’s Global Practices and Infrastructure Business.
- Approximately 15 - 20 Years of increasing responsibilities within the rail transit or railway industries as a California licensed Professional Engineer
- Demonstrated excellent relationships with local strategic clients across Southern California and the Western United States
- A minimum of 10 years of senior experience on major rail and transit project with increasing responsibilities;
- Capable of serving as Project Manager or Project Director.
- Active in industry organizations…AREMA, APTA, TRB, or RSSI.
- Demonstrated experience in a leadership role with responsibility for developing and implementing effective business and strategic plans, skill development programs, and staff mentoring.
- Willingness to be a leader of our rail and transit practice in a dynamic and global company with an eye on technical excellence, client satisfaction, and team building.
