Principal or senior tunnel engineer

Job Profile

Our Tunnels division is one of the global leaders in tunnel planning, design and construction in all conditions from soft ground to hard rock. Having planned and designed numerous road, rail, metro, water and service tunnels across the globe including Crossrail, the SMART road/water tunnel in Malaysia, Boston Central Artery in the USA, Lesotho Highlands Water Project in Africa, the Channel Tunnel between the UK and France, and much of the London underground metro system, we continue to be involved in many of the most challenging civil/structural and tunnel, sub-terrain, underground works and hydro-electric engineering projects.

We're looking to recruit an experienced Principal civil/structural engineer within the tunnels industry to join our expanding Reading office and grow our Berkshire portfolio.

Job Description

As an important addition to the expanding tunnel and civil/structural design team in Reading, you will be supporting several major projects. You will be a key team member, with a strong technical background and lead projects focused on effective and reliable delivery.

We are constantly looking to add new business to our portfolio so local knowledge and the ability to bring or build a local network to drive business development is equally as important.

Day-to-day responsibilities could include but are not limited to:

  • Project management and coordination with other engineering disciplines including structural, environmental, mechanical and electrical engineers covering a range of project requirements from new build to modification, maintenance or refurbishment
  • Detailed design calculations and drawings for main civil and underground works and involvement in drawing productions, design feasibilities and interfaces between key structural elements above and below ground
  • Support or lead on bid management assisting in tenders for a variety of major projects including tunnel and underground work projects
  • Involvement in planning and designing underground/heavy works
  • Responsible for production and delivery of reliable design solutions, reports, specifications or drawings
  • Design engineering for preliminary and detailed design
  • Become integral and contribute to the business and the team’s technical development
  • Assist in the mentoring of new graduate engineers

Candidate Specification

Essential competencies / skills:

  • Experience of working within a design consultancy on multiple concurrent commissions, and liaising
    with clients
  • Understand design risk management, construction programming, tendering process and quality assurance management
  • Experience of methods, tools and techniques for the design and assessment of tunnel designs
  • Practical experience in the construction of underground and related structures, shafts preferably with UK design codes
  • Chartered with MEng or MA qualifications or equivalent
  • Good communication, team working and problem solving skills
  • Based withinin the local Berkshire area and willing to travel nationally/internationally when required
  • Networking skills
  • Business development experience within the Berkshire area

Desired competencies / skills:

  • Skills in any of the following would be highly valued: civil, structural, geotechnical, railway, water/waste water or metro engineering
  • Ideally understand well or experienced with both geotechnical and structural analysis programmes
  • Experience in structural design (including familiarity with Eurocodes) and understanding of basic soil or rock mechanics
  • Knowledge of NEC form of contract, with practical experience implementing and administering project change procedures
