Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of senior structural design engineer based in our Vancouver office. You will contribute to the delivery of a range of projects within the transportation infrastructure team of Mott MacDonald in Canada and United States, as well as supporting other parts of the international business.

Working as a senior structural design engineer within the transportation infrastructure team, you will support our continued and anticipated future growth.
You will contribute to and lead the following activities within the project lifecycle:
  • Design of transportation and heavy civil structures both above and below ground.
  • Design of industrial buildings / enclosures.
  • Prepare conceptual / feasibility, preliminary, final engineering design and provide technical support during construction.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams of designers, project engineers and project managers in the delivery of projects.
  • Deliver projects using conventional design / bid / build, design build and EPCM methods.
  • Undertake designs in a timely and effective manner within project cost and schedule constraints.
  • Interface with other disciplines and offices as required.
  • Support, mentor and develop junior staff. ​
The ideal candidate will also be willing to contribute to projects within other sectors and offices, as required.

Candidate Specification

You will have experience in transportation and industrial market segments and possess the following skills and experience:
  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Professional Engineering either registered in or eligible for registration in Canada.
  • Experience in the design of transportation and heavy civil structures both above and below ground and, industrial buildings / enclosures utilizing reinforced concrete and structural steel.
  • Interacting with geotechnical specialists and integration of soil structure interaction analysis into structure designs.
  • Experience in performance based seismic design to current standards and knowledge of techniques to maintain structure stability in the event of soil liquefaction and ground movement.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite programs with high skill level in Excel.
    Ability to write Visual Basic code would be an asset.
  • Keen interest in delivering projects using BIM methods and technology driven solutions.
  • Experience in design software including (similar to) SAP 2000, S‑Frame, Midas, Response 2000, SP Column, L‑Pile.
  • Experience with Canadian design codes and standards including NBC, BCBC, CSA A23.3, CSA S16, CSA W59, CSA S6 and CSA S304.1.
  • Preparation of technical specifications, tender documents for various delivery methods.
  • Excellent communicator (both oral and written) and skilled problem-solver with a commitment to thrive in a proactive organization where client service is paramount.
  • Positive ‘can-do’ attitude, to working with colleagues and clients.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills in complex and changing environments, and
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain good working relationships with clients and project teams.

Desirable Candidate Attributes:

In addition, the following would be desirable in candidates:
  • Knowledge of US codes and standards including IBC, AASHTO, ASCE -7, ACI 318, AISC 360, AWS D1.1, ACI 530, and AREMA.
  • Design of masonry and timber structures.
  • Working with other disciplines including Architects, Electrical, Mechanical and Piping specialists.
