Principal traction power engineer

Job Description

You will be based in our Altrincham office. Depending on project requirements, there may also be a need to travel to other locations (company or client, office or site) within the UK or overseas.

You will be responsible for providing senior level input to the projects undertaken by the traction power team in Altrincham supporting the Traction power team leader. This will include providing senior technical input, on the issues described above, on major projects which Mott MacDonald is undertaking.

Candidate Specification

As the successful candidate you will:
  • Be a Chartered electrical engineer.
  • Be a traction power specialist with a proven track record of successfully dealing with complex issues on both AC and DC traction power systems and their interfaces including interfaces between AC and DC traction power systems and interfaces between traction and non-traction power systems (HV and LV).
  • Be competent to deal with the design of traction power substations and also the assessment of issues arising from existing designs.
  • Have a good understanding of DC and Low Frequency sources of interference (e.g. harmonics) and coupling mechanisms.
  • Have a good understanding of DC stray current issues and their management.
  • Have a good understanding of computer modelling techniques commonly applied to the analysis of traction power issues.
  • Be fully conversant with British and Network Rail standards applicable to traction power systems, including earthing and bonding, and also industry best practice in the same areas.
  • Have a good understanding of main line railway practices and processes for carrying out major works.
  • Have the ability to communicate with clarity both verbally and in writing.
  • Be able to represent Mott MacDonald at a senior level with clients on a technical level.
  • Be able to deliver to deadlines and budgets, including the co-ordination of the inputs of other engineers within the team, both junior and senior.
