Engineer - roads/highways

Job Profile

Our highways design team in Scotland is expanding its presence and we have a challenging career opportunity for a roads/highways engineer. You could be based in our Glasgow/ Edinburgh offices where you would support our growing portfolio of work in the UK. We are committed to developing our people and one goal we will set for you in your development plan will to be to become chartered engineer CEng.

We are delivering projects to clients such as Highways England and Transport Scotland. We specialise in design and construction, progressing schemes from option identification and appraisal through preliminary and detail design to supervision of works on site. We also provide advice on procurement options and administer contracts from tender assessment, through interim valuations to settlement of final accounts.

Job Description

  • Reporting directly to the design team leader, you will be responsible for the provision of road design services on the project.
  • You will also have responsibility for the delivery of the elements of a project assigned by the design team leader to the required deadline by undertaking design work and / or assigning work to and managing the design team
  • You should want to become a chartered engineer with a relevant institution (normally the institution of civil engineers or chartered institution of highways and transportation) as soon as possible taking every opportunity possible to gain relevant experience

Candidate Specification

For this role you profile must include a good blend of the following:
  • A degree in civil engineering
  • Working towards chartered status with ICE or CIHT or equivalent
  • Experience in the design and assessment of trunk roads using the procedures set out in the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges
  • Working knowledge of roads design standards is essential
  • Practical experience of road alignment design using industry standard software packages
Additionally if you can offer further experience in these areas, this would increase your suitability for this role.
  • Appreciation of the issues which affect route and scheme assessment
  • Appreciation safety issues as they affect road design
  • Appreciation of contract procurement and management/supervision of construction
