This is a unique opportunity to take on an exciting role which will pay a key part in the next chapter of this well-established and highly successful team.

The Technology Services team within Mott MacDonald develops and supports complex software systems for clients throughout the UK and within the Mott MacDonald group.These systems are developed by our in-house software engineering staff, utilising a wide range of programming technologies.

Project-orientated development teams within the group are involved in the full lifecycle of software engineering: requirements capture, design, development, deployment, and live system support.

With the growth in demand for these skills across the wider business, we are looking to compliment the software delivery team in Glasgow w,ith a second team of software engineers located in another Mott MacDonald UK office, which would be one of Cardiff, Newcastle,Southampton or York. The key objectives for this Software Team Lead role is to work with colleagues in Glasgow to integrate this team with the existing development team and also to lead and contribute to the software engineering work assigned to the entire team.We plan to grow this team to at least 4 people over a 12 to 18-month period.

You will be self-reliant and able to work autonomously, leading the local software engineering team with support from management and technical colleagues in Glasgow to ensure tasks are completed and delivered to a high standard within our established processes and procedures.

There may be elements of client liaison in the role, requiring an understanding of client requirements and the ability to develop these into opportunities for both development teams. You will be comfortable in explaining issues and solutions in appropriate detail to clients of varying levels of technical understanding, fully demonstrating professionalism in all activities.

Job Description

Reporting to the Systems Delivery Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Collaborating with Project Managers and other Team Leads to plan and monitor project work, primarily the delivery of quality
    software and associated technical services
  • Design, hands-on implementation and testing of high-quality software, including web-based applications, desktop-based applications, and server-side components
  • Working with Project Managers to proactively manage the pool of technical resources across the team
  • Undertaking both greenfield and evolutionary development
  • Mentoring junior technical team members in best software engineering practice
  • Production of requirements, design, test and user documentation
  • Rigorous application of our quality and governance processes
Other responsibilities may also arise as the business need evolves and the team grows, these may include:
  • Liaising with clients to develop work and identify opportunities for further business
  • Understanding the clients’ requirements and ensuring we deliver them
  • Support in business development activities, including providing design and estimation input to bids, exploring technical solutions
  • Identifying and introducing appropriate software development technologies to maintain quality and competitiveness
You will act as a guide and mentor to junior staff, helping develop their technical skills and ensuring that good practice is maintained. In this hands-on role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a group of like-minded peers, ensuring that your technical capability is continually challenged and validated. Working with these peers, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the overall technical direction of the team, ensuring we continue to employ appropriate technologies and techniques to support our ongoing success, while diversifying your own technical skills. You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the future strategic direction of our business.

As part of building this role, the successful candidate will initially spend time in our Glasgow office to learn and understand our products and processes allowing these to be applied to the new software engineering team. Colleagues from Glasgow will also regularly spend time in the new team location to support the new Software Team Lead. Some aspects of this job will require occasional work outside normal office hours, or on client site, so some flexibility is required.

Candidate Specification

Your skills profile should include:
  • Substanial software engineering experience, developing and delivering software solutions
  • Proven practical experience in team-leading and implementation of software delivery projects
  • Clear understanding of software design, coding, configuration management and testing processes
  • Experience of successful delivery to external clients
  • Experience of agile software development methodology
  • Extensive experience with Java and SQL
  • Extensive experience with Object Orientated Design
  • Extensive experience with design, coding, configuration management and testing processes
  • Experience of the full project life cycle including deploying custom solutions to production environments
  • Spring Framework and associated libraries
  • Automated testing
  • Ability to objectively assess and recommend technologies

  • Be able to communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and senior management through applicable media

Desired academic, professional qualifications and experience:
CEng or CITP Status
Prince II Foundation or Practitioner
