Experienced Graduate Civil Engineer

Job Profile

Mott MacDonald are seeking a Graduate Engineer to be part of our Highways and Infrastructure design team in Norwich. The successful candidate will utilise their skills and experience across a broad range of projects in both the public and private sectors, with clients such as Highways England, Network Rail and Local Authorities.

Job Description

As an experienced Graduate Engineer, working within our Highways and Infrastructure team in Norwich, you will be expected to work in collaboration with our sister offices in London, Croydon, Cambridge, Brighton and Southampton as well as our offices in the wider UK and overseas. The role will be varied as well as demanding and challenging, but provides an opportunity to develop your own career within Mott MacDonald with a view to achieving Chartered status. There will be the opportunity to receive structured training towards Chartered status with the ICE, which will be strongly encouraged.
Key elements of the Graduate Engineer role are:
  • Technical excellence
    • Working on a range of projects of varying size and scale across both the public and private sectors throughout the project lifecycle
    • You will be required to work autonomously in undertaking your projects at all stages of the project lifecycle
    • You will be required to successfully manage projects or project elements in accordance with our quality procedures, and within financial and programme targets.
    • Ensuring delivery of assigned project work without the need for re-work
  • Client satisfaction
    • Working with a variety of Public and Private clients ranging from Local Authorities to multinational companies.
    • Working on projects of both local and national significance and importance
  • Team working and collaboration
    • You will support the team leader / project manager to maintain a delivery culture
    • You may be expected to lead project teams or project elements through all phases of a project, from bidding to completion.
    • Proactive approach to project and technical challenges
    • Providing positive leadership in Health & Safety
    • Ensuring compliance with corporate governance
    • Reporting issues to the Team Leader
    • Delegation of assigned tasks to other members of the team as necessary

Candidate Specification

As a developing Highways and Infrastructure professional, the ideal candidate will have:
  • A track-record in highways and infrastructure design projects.
  • Technically astute, with some experience of mentoring and developing apprentices / technicians.
  • Knowledge of highway design standards and sound engineering principles.
  • A confident communicator with good verbal and written skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of working across multi-discipline designs. We require a combination of the following competencies / skills:
    • Understanding design standards including: DMRB / SHW/ Manual for Streets
    • Knowledge of highway design principals
    • Experience of engineering design calculations
    • Knowledge and experience of using design tools, for example AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage.
    • Knowledge of the use of BIM to coordinate design inputs
    • Problem solving, offering solutions to challenges
  • Capability to work to deadlines and work autonomously when required
  • Experience of preparing detailed construction drawings and standard details and Technical Specifications
  • Understanding personal Health and Safety responsibilities.
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Be prepared to work away from home as required
Minimum qualifications and experience:
  • BEng/MEng in civil engineering
  • At least two years’ experience in a design office environment, preferably highways and civil infrastructure
  • Ability to complete civils design calculations, technical reports, specifications and design risk assessments under supervision

  • Working towards CEng or IEng MICE
  • Ambitious & self-motivated

  • Able to work using own initiative
  • Confident and articulate
  • A practical positive clear thinker
