Job Profile

Mott MacDonald’s global aviation team of approximately 100 dedicated full-time staff is a sub-sector within the transportation sector.
Our centre of excellence in the UK of approximately 60 staff work collaboratively with satellite teams in all global business regions.

Job Profile / Description: Principal Project Manager

The Principal Project Manager (Airports) will work in the Airports and Masterplanning Services workstream of the aviation team, coordinating and managing the delivery of airport planning projects. You will be responsible for the production and submission of deliverables to the client; from proposals at bidding stage to technical deliverables at project stage, whilst closely following internal procedures to ensure highest quality output.
You will be the pivotal point between the project team, the client and other stakeholders, ensuring effective communication is in place. Striving to exceed the client’s expectations, you will closely liaise with the client team on a regular basis.

As is the nature and working culture of our team, you will also get involved in technical tasks, leading and actively supporting technical delivery of key project workstreams relating to airport planning. Production of technical deliverables and/or guiding more junior members of the team will be part of your day-to-day work.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
Although this role is primarily focussed on project management, key responsibilities will also include technical aspects. Therefore, your day-to-day work will include a mix of project management as well as technical tasks.
Your project management responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Develop, maintain and monitor a project programme for planning, scheduling and producing deliverables.
Identify, manage, control and mitigate project risks.
Communicate the project programme to the project team as well as continuously monitor the project progress against the programme.
Identify resources and skills required to complete project tasks.
Estimate time input from appropriate resources to complete deliverables according to project programme.
Maximise profitability of projects by continuously monitoring cost against budget, making adjustments to the budget or work plan where necessary.
Manage the financial aspect of projects, including continuous reviews of cost spent against budget and keeping internal financial management systems up to date.
Demonstrate commercial awareness around contractual obligations, most importantly the scope of works and key terms.
Organise client visits where appropriate, and support technical team in meetings with clients.
Close liaison with the client and other key stakeholders.
Managing and coordination of project input from other sources, e.g. sub-consultants, where appropriate.
Work closely with the Project Principal / Project Director, seeking regular project progress meetings and addressing any issues promptly.
Ensure quality delivery to highest industry and client standards and Mott MacDonald best practice guidelines and quality assurance procedures.
Business development, proposal writing and interviews and presentations.
Your technical responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Lead and prepare technical deliverables relating to airport masterplanning including phasing plans.
Check and supervise production of technical layout plans.
Outline and prepare written reports or presentations intended for submission to the client.
Check and supervise production of technical layout plans.
Lead and coordinate work packages within a project relating to: airfield planning and design including secondary systems; airfield simulation modelling; aerodrome safeguarding; ancillary infrastructure planning.
Effectively delegate tasks to more junior members of the team.
Guide and mentor more junior members of the team.
Management and coordination of specialist teams (including sub-consultants).

Candidate Specification

Candidate Specification / Key Skills and Abilities:

Project Management related key skills and abilities include:
  • Substantive in-depth project management and delivery, customer liaison and commercial experience, probably gained over a substantial period with private and/or public-sector organisations.
  • Experience in taking responsibility for the airport planning elements of major and complex development and airport infrastructure proposals.
  • Excellent people management, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in assisting with the establishing of project scoping, contractual and financial management.
  • Proven ability to delegate and manage the work of junior staff members.
  • Able to think strategically, prioritise and plan effectively while balancing competing demands.
  • Good financial and commercial awareness, including budgeting and monitoring of budgets.
  • A commitment to providing high quality solutions and advice to clients.
  • Capable of building strong customer relationships, developing business, motivating and developing staff and raising our profile.
  • Proven success in business development activities, and able to demonstrate successful bids/tenders.

Technical airport planning related key skills and abilities include:
  • Significant relevant experience in airfield and wider airport planning.
  • Significant knowledge of the South American aviation market.
  • Significant experience of working with or in the South American aviation market in airport planning related projects.
  • A team player and a self-starter comfortable in taking responsibility for their work.
  • Computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Office software, as well as computer aided design software packages and (preferably) simulation software packages.
  • Clear and efficient verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Capable of carrying out technical work with little or no supervision.
  • Able to organise work-load according to need of project and team.
  • Willingness to work on varied and concurrent commissions, with a range of project stakeholders and represent the company to clients.
  • A willingness to travel overseas (sometimes at short notice) as required.

Education
  • Degree in engineering / planning or equivalent, preferably with an airport focus.

Language
  • Fluent in English with full proficiency to work, communicate, and write reports in English.
  • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Preferably, basic knowledge of a third language.
