Senior Lighting Technician/Lighting Engineer

Mott MacDonald are seeking a senior lighting technician/lighting engineer to be part of our Highways & Infrastructure Lighting design team. The successful candidate will utilise their skills and experience across a broad range of projects in both the public and private sectors, with clients such as Highways England, Network Rail and Local Authorities.

Job Description

As an experienced senior lighting technician/lighting engineer working within the Highways and Infrastructure team you will be expected to work in collaboration with our sister offices in London, Croydon, Cambridge, Brighton and Southampton as well as our offices in the wider UK and overseas.
The role involves undertaking the design, implementation and commissioning of external lighting schemes, general electrical design works and environmental lighting impacts assessments within budgetary and timescale constraints, as directed by the Senior Engineer or appointed officer.
The role will be varied as well as demanding and challenging, but provides an opportunity to develop your own career within Mott MacDonald.

  • Technical excellence
    • Working on a range of projects of varying size and scale across both the public and private sectors throughout the project lifecycle
    • You will be required to work autonomously in undertaking your projects, in particular at feasibility and concept design stages, depending on project requirements
    • You will be required to successfully manage projects or project elements in accordance with our quality procedures, and within financial and programme targets.
    • Ensuring delivery of assigned project work without the need for re-work
  • Client satisfaction
    • Working with a variety of public and private clients ranging from local authorities to multinational companies.
    • Working on projects of both local and national significance and importance

    • You will support the team leader / project manager to maintain a delivery culture
    • You may be expected to lead project teams or project elements through all phases of a project, from bidding to completion.

    • Reporting issues to the Team Leader
    • Delegation of assigned tasks to other members of the team as necessary

Candidate Specification

As a successful Highways & Infrastructure Lighting professional, the ideal candidate will have:
  • An evident track-record in infrastructure lighting design, electrical design and environmental lighting impact assessment projects.
  • Technically astute, with some experience of mentoring and developing apprentices / technicians.
  • Knowledge of lighting, electrical design and environmental lighting guidance with sound engineering principles.
  • A confident communicator with excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of working across multi-discipline designs. We require a combination of the following competencies / skills:
    • Understanding design standards including: BS 5489-1 / BS EN 12464-2 / BS7671 and DMRB
    • Technical and environmental report writing
    • Experience of engineering design calculations
    • Knowledge and experience using design tools, for example AutoCAD, Lighting Reality, AGI32, Civil 3D and Amtech ProDesign.
    • Knowledge of the use of BIM to coordinate design inputs
    • Problem solving, offering solutions to challenges
  • Capability to work to deadlines and work autonomously when required
  • Experience of preparing detailed construction drawings and standard details and technical specifications
  • Understanding personal Health and safety responsibilities.
  • The candidate must be able to attain UK security clearance for working on secure / sensitive projects
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Be prepared to work away from home as required
Minimum qualifications:
  • BTEC Level 3 / NVQ Electrical / Electronic Engineering (or equivalent)
  • BTEC Level 5 / NVQ / Bachelor's Degree Electrical / Electronic Engineering (or equivalent - desirable)
  • Highway Electrical Registration scheme (HERs) - Approved person Engineering Technician Status Approved person under National Highways Sector 8 Scheme (desirable)
  • ILP diploma in lighting (or equivalent desirable)
  • EngTech AMILP from the Institution of Lighting Professional (desirable)
