Associate director development planning

Job Profile

Transport planning is a core service offered by Mott MacDonald and is an integral part of Mott MacDonald’s substantial transport business. Our transport portfolio includes some of the largest, highest profile and most challenging projects in the UK and beyond including HS2, East London river crossings, Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games 2022, TfWM PRISM Model for the West Midlands, Urban Growth Company and Heathrow Airport as well as smaller scale infrastructure and development planning projects and overseas projects in places such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bermuda, Kenya and Gibraltar.

We carry out significant numbers of transport assessments and travel plans in connection with development proposals and major transport infrastructure. Development and regeneration land uses include major mixed-use sites, residential, commercial, educational, industrial, entertainment, leisure, transport, power and water uses. Our clients include house builders, developers, landowners, utility companies, local authority property departments and educational establishments. We work for both private and public-sector companies including assessing transport assessments for local authority transport and planning departments.

Job Description

Job Description:
You will have responsibility for project directorship and delivery, team development and management, business development and customer liaison. A key part of the business will be relationships with clients and working in multi-disciplinary teams where Mott MacDonald provides a variety of engineering, environment, transport planning, costing and related services. Internal networking will also be important.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsibility for leading on business development, proposal writing and interviews and presentations
Liaison with clients and other project stakeholders
Directing project teams on projects including transport aspects of developments and major transport and utility infrastructure
Ensuring quality delivery to industry and client standards and Mott MacDonald best practice guidelines and quality assurance procedures
Expanding our external market in Birmingham, the West Midlands and possibly internationally plus internal markets within the Mott MacDonald Group
Leading negotiations with local and national highway and planning authorities
Leading and encouraging professional excellence activities
Being a senior member of the management team for the Birmingham office which provides a wide range of transport planning services across Central England and overseas

Candidate Specification

Candidate Specification:
A degree in a relevant subject
Membership of a relevant professional institution such as CIHT or TPS
Substantive in-depth technical, project delivery, leadership, customer liaison and commercial experience, probably gained over a substantial period with private and/or public-sector organisations, preferably with a consultancy
Experience in taking responsibility for the transport planning elements of major and complex development and transport infrastructure proposals
A strong track record of successful business development
Good leadership, team management, communication and interpersonal skills
A commitment to providing high quality solutions and advice to clients
Capable of building strong customer relationships, developing business, motivating and developing staff and raising our profile
Experience of successful negotiation with highways and planning authorities
The following would also be desirable but are not essential:
An MSc or post degree qualifications in a transport related subject
Public inquiry expert witness experience
Knowledge of the West Midlands Development Planning market
Financial management experience
