We apply the same thinking whether we’re managing our carbon footprint and buying our offices’ furniture from sustainable sources or devising innovative ways for reducing HIV infections in South Africa and achieving 200% efficiencies in cooling for the Qatar 2022 World Cup zero carbon demonstration stadium.
We’ve learned – and shown – that real sustainability delivers real value for our clients, for the communities we work in and for our own business, regardless of the sector or the challenges. Our goal is to be the leading global partner in advancing sustained economic, social and environmental well-being.
Creating real value from sustainability
We know it is through the performance of our projects that we make the greatest contribution to sustainability. We take this responsibility seriously, right from the outset of any project we seek to maximise ways to turn it into an opportunity for growth as well as maximising sustainable outcomes for the environment and local community.
Through continuous dialogue with our clients we not only examine the specific needs and challenges of a project, we look at those of the wider context: at regional, market, society and organisational level. We then draw on our global experience and knowledge to look at the project holistically, integrate all aspects and transform constraints into opportunities – thereby creating real value from sustainability.
We are working to embed sustainability ever deeper in our organisation and our services. This is a constant focus, as we know that sustainability is essential to the long-term success of our business.
Sustainability is led from the top – where corporate accountability also rests. Our chairman heads the Group Sustainability Steering Committee involving the Group and regional sustainability managers plus representatives of professional excellence and practice management. The committee provides strategic direction to the company and assurance and accountability that sustainability is progressed in accordance with the goals we've set. Sustainability is thus a standing item on all board agendas.
Carbon as a metric of business success
For us carbon reduction is synonymous with business success. We pledged in 2008 to cut our carbon emissions per employee by 5% year on year because we want to play our part in tackling climate change.
And because we believe carbon is a metric of business efficiency – less travelling, better office environments for improved delivery – that benefits not only ourselves but our many customers who count their suppliers’ performance on their own triple bottom line.
Since 2008 we have embraced the Carbon Disclosure Project to provide external visibility of our performance which we report annually as part of our corporate responsibility report.
