Globally, the needs of and attitudes towards walking and cycling vary widely and extensive public consultation is needed to develop sustainable solutions which not only address local needs, but also help challenge people’s perceptions.

Light rail transit (LRT) systems and highway traffic often compete for space, time and priority. Conventionally, each mode is analysed independently. We innovated by developing LIMA, an integrated modelling platform incorporating LRT systems and highway traffic. Multimodal interactions are captured for the first time, resulting in a deeper understanding of how the systems interact.
This insight enables optimised design of schedules and signalling systems, which produces the shortest possible reliable journey times and minimises road traffic congestion. The ability to test operations before implementation also reduces project risk. LIMA can be applied to any LRT or street car project. It’s now being used in Calgary, Canada, to ensure a network upgrade increasing passenger capacity by 33% can be implemented without causing disruption.
