Women and children's health

Women and children’s health and wellbeing is crucial – not only does it impact the welfare of families and societies, it also affects economic growth and national democracy. Our work in this key area encompasses sexual and reproductive health, including adolescent health, maternal health, early childhood and nutrition. We also recognise the importance of addressing men’s needs in relation to reproductive health issues.

Health Resource Facility for Australia's Aid Program We are improving maternal and child health in Asia.

Health systems in many developing countries are failing to provide the required level of maternal and reproductive health services. Furthermore, women and children face a variety of economic and cultural barriers to accessing health care.

We address women and children’s health through the broader perspective of health systems and ensure integrated delivery of evidence-based interventions. Improvements to women and children’s health are dependent on addressing broader cross-cutting issues such as universal access to education, access to clean water and sanitation, equity and rights and increased household income.

We work to improve women and children’s health by:

  • Engaging with governments, national institutions, NGOs and multilateral agencies to tackle complex problems concerning women and children’s health
  • Identifying gaps and areas to strengthen so that national health systems can meet women and children’s needs, and we provide practical and innovative evidence-based solutions
  • Bringing a wide range of in-house technical expertise to our work, including clinical practitioners, experts in health management, human resources and health systems specialists
  • Complementing this expertise with a large database of local, regional and national consultants. This enables us to provide a comprehensive response to women and children’s health service needs
  • Drawing on expertise from other teams in Mott MacDonald, including research, social development, communication technology, education, water and sanitation.
  • Addressing issues that can be resolved in the short-term as well as analysing and planning for tackling complex issues and achieving longer-term results

Added value

Decline in mother to child transmission of HIV

In South Africa the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV fell from 3.5% in 2010 to 2.7% in 2011. We played a part in this success by managing the DFID ‘Accelerated Plan’ which worked to improve national services to prevent HIV transmission from mothers to their children.

Supporting Pakistan Government to improve maternal health

We manage the DFID Technical Resource Facility (TRF), which provides technical assistance to the health sector in Pakistan with a focus on maternal, newborn and child health. Assignments have included a review of the national community midwife training programme.

Empowering girls in Zambia

We have designed and are implementing an evaluation of a programme which aims to empower poor and vulnerable adolescent girls to improve their sexual and reproductive health.
