Measuring the carbon footprint of products, projects and services is the first step of successful carbon management. We have been involved in predicting and measuring carbon emissions on projects in all of the sectors we work in, from strategic and conceptual through to design and construction.
Building on our successful involvement in the UK’s Infrastructure Carbon Review and our involvement in developing carbon management systems for major infrastructure companies, we are co-authoring a new specification for managing carbon in the infrastructure sector, PAS2080.
With the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the UK, we developed the industry-standard CESMMM3 cost and carbon database. We also allow BIM systems to access the database so that a BIM model can incorporate carbon accounting from the outset.
Carbon markets are an effective means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at lowest cost. We have helped clients around the world to develop carbon assets under the Clean Development Mechanism and companies covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. Our climate change policy experts have a wealth of knowledge in existing compliance and pre-compliance markets as well as up-and-coming schemes around the world. We can help clients understand the evolving international landscape and provide advice on system design and compliance.
Renewable and clean energy
We are recognised as experts in the development of renewable energy schemes that are low or zero carbon in operation. We advise developers and lenders on solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower schemes. Our multidisciplinary team have also worked on all of the UK’s carbon capture and storage pilot studies to date.
Low carbon development
Many of our engineers are certified to BREEAM, LEED, BEEAM, CEEQUAL and Greenstars standards. A growing portfolio of our projects achieves the highest levels of these standards.
We helped Dubai Electricity develop a building management scheme for office systems that can reduce peak energy demand by 40%. We have also designed a system to achieve similar energy reduction for the South Kensington Estate in London using aquifer thermal energy storage technology.
Low carbon development is also relevant to rural societies and economies. We oversaw a range of field-based activities under the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) scheme for the Indonesia Australia Forest Carbon Partnership, as well as the Integrated Watershed Management Development Component within the German-Indonesian Forest (REDD+) Programme - a major achievement for the local communities.
Planning, EIA and due diligence
We advise on the impacts of new developments on carbon emissions, to facilitate decision making by local and national governments, investors and other stakeholders. We were amongst the first to include consideration of carbon in EIAs, such as that for Crossrail, and services are increasingly demanded for planning applications and environmental assessments for the power, transport and other infrastructure. We also advise finance institutions on the risks associated with emissions from new infrastructure to ensure they meet their committed goals, such as the Equator Principles.
