Mott MacDonald awards and appointments round-up

Mott MacDonald celebrated an award-winning month with several of its engineering projects and individuals receiving recognition for their innovation and excellence in design.

1. The Tunnelling Industry Awards
Project: SMART (Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel) in Malaysia
Award won: Excellence in Tunnel Design
Our role: Our team designed the tunnels and underground structures, the hydraulics and storm water control systems, and the road tunnel ventilation, lighting and communications for this very challenging project. The scheme is targeted to enter service at the end of 2006 and we currently have a team working with the contractor on site to assist with construction and commissioning.

Project: Delhi Metro
Award won: The International Project of the Year
Our role: Our team from all parts of the Group delivered the wide range of multi-discipline services necessary to design this premier metro project which went into service in July 2005.

Project: Airside Road Tunnel at Heathrow Airport
Award won: UK Project of the Year award
Our role: We are one of BAA’s first tier integrated suppliers and are responsible for the design of all tunnels, foundations and substructures at Heathrow and as such we designed this tunnel and worked with BAA and their contractors on this project.

2. British Construction Industry Awards
Project: Clapham Junction Bridges Reconstruction
Award won: Best Small Civil Engineering Project Award
Our role: we designed all of the civil and structural engineering work on this challenging project as the design engineers for the contractor.

“This was stunning,” said the judges, “- so much going on in such a confined window of time and space so well planned and delivered.”

Project: Taiwan High Speed Rail
Award won: International Award
Our role: As leader of an international consultant joint venture, Mott MacDonald’s role is providing independent checking and site engineer services for the entire rail link for the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation.

Project: The Jubilee Library, Brighton
Award won: Both the Building Award and the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award
Our role: Mott MacDonald assisted Brighton and Hove City Council in the development and procurement of this landmark PFI project.

Project: Sage Gateshead
Award won: Local Authority Public Building of the Year
Our role: The Sage Gateshead building required a high degree of design and engineering excellence to ensure that it met the needs of all its visitors and performers and made the most of its riverside location. As principal engineering consultant, Connell Mott MacDonald, part of the Mott MacDonald group, was responsible for civil, structural and building services design of this £70 million iconic brownfield development project.

October also saw the Sage Gateshead being awarded:
- The RIBA Inclusive Design Award
- Gold Roses Design Award for Best Public Building

3. The Highways Magazine Awards
Award won: The Consultant of the Year Award
Our role: Andy Pledge, Head of Traffic Management at Mott MacDonald integrated transport Division (Southampton, Stoneham) and his team, achieved the Consultant of the Year Award for Mott MacDonald at the Highways Magazine Awards in acknowledgement for his ground-breaking work in promoting passive safety and encouraging the Highways Agency to adopt passively safe road signs and lighting columns on some of its major routes.

4. Appointments
Alan Powderham, Director of Transportation was invited to join the prestigious Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) which is sponsored by the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers and the Health and Safety Executive. It has a remit to consider current practice, trends and innovations in design, construction and maintenance from the standpoint of structural safety. It is also charged with giving warnings to relevant bodies where unacceptable risk is believed to exist and aims to spot in advance potential structural problems that could threaten public safety.

Alan specialises in foundation engineering, leads research and innovation in transportation throughout the Mott MacDonald Group and chairs the Group’s transportation Professional Excellence Forum. He has won many awards, is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a visiting lecturer at Cambridge University and Imperial College in the UK, as well as the Universities of Illinois, Vienna and St Petersburg.
