Mott MacDonald appointed on Palm Jumeirah monorail project

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Nakheel LLC to provide engineering and site supervision services for a new $400 million monorail on the Palm Jumeirah complex off Dubai, UAE.

Palm Jumeirah is a large artificial island complex located off the shore of Dubai approximately 5km2. The complex encompasses four main islands, one in the shape of a palm tree and three providing a crescent surrounding the palm to protect it from the open sea. This major development commissioned by Nakheel will include a mixture of retail, leisure, residential and hotel developments.

To supplement the road infrastructure to the main complexes on the Palm, Nakheel has commissioned the Palm Jumeirah Transit Project. This is a dedicated monorail system capable of handling up to 6,000 passengers per hour in each direction. The monorail will be approximately 5.5km in length and will run from the Gateway Towers development on the mainland to the Atlantis resort and water park at the head of the crescent of Palm Jumeirah. Provision for possible future extensions of the line, to allow for an interchange with the nearest Dubai metro station and around the outside of the crescent islands, has been incorporated into the design.

Mott MacDonald is providing key consultancy services including review and audit of the detailed design of all civil, structural, mechanical and electrical (M&E) works; verification and validation of M&E systems; review of construction management plans and spot inspection of civil, structural and M&E works to verify progress, quality and safety. The consultant will also witness M&E testing and commissioning and provide technical advice to Nakheel throughout the development.

Mike Barron, Mott MacDonald’s project manager said, “We’re delighted to be assisting Nakheel on this exciting new monorail scheme. The challenge of integrating the design and construction of the monorail with the other spectacular developments on the Palm, offers a real opportunity to demonstrate our expertise and experience in transit systems.”

Mott MacDonald was commissioned in April to provide engineering and consultancy services on the Jumeirah Golf Estates which is due for completion next year, the monorail is to be completed by the end of 2008.
