Mott MacDonald helps keep traffic moving in Leeds

Mott MacDonald has recently been appointed by Leeds City Council to help rationalise, upgrade and extend the Leeds Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTC) facility. This five-year partnership will provide Leeds with the tools to tackle congestion.

A fully integrated control room will amalgamate the existing eight separate systems to allow simple seamless reaction to changing traffic conditions. In addition, an ambitious traveller information module will provide the public at home or on the move with the real time multi modal information needed for them to reduce con-gestion by avoiding it. It will also assist the Council in its aim to rank as one of the top European cities in the use of intelligent transport systems.

Mott MacDonald’s support will include delivery of software, hardware and ITS consultancy. Mott MacDonald will be extending their Common Data Management Facility (CDMF) - already de-ployed thanks to Mott MacDonald in places like Lancashire, West Sussex, Glasgow and Manchester - to greatly increase operational functionality and hence become a powerful information base and delay reduction tool.

In Leeds, Mott MacDonald will bring together the existing disparate devices in the UTC control room into one operational unity. This will allow operators to use a single user interface to implement traffic strategies across several systems. Travel information will be available to the public via a range of interactive media. The CDMF will also be used to provide car park guidance information. Free text signs will be available to assist with a traffic strategy or to tie in with city wide emergency procedures.

Fraser Macdonald, Mott MacDonald’s project manager said, “We are delighted to be assisting Leeds City Council and look forward to demonstrating our expertise in ITS and delivering a solution that gives control room staff integrated control of key traffic manage-ment systems, resulting in streamlined operational efficiency and improved performance monitoring.”
