As well as 207,000m² retail space, two luxury hotels, an energy centre, a 20 screen cinema and multi-storey car park, the complex includes a dramatic 40m high glazed atrium roof and the Middle East’s largest indoor climate controlled water park.
Mott MacDonald was appointed lead consultant and engineer by Majid Al Futtaim for the £200 million mall. We produced the design of all structural, mechanical, electrical and public health services plus roads and infrastructure, vertical transportation, lighting and façade engineering services.
Major architectural features are incorporated into the mall such as an intricate large scale roof light, ornate paving patterns and a traditional Arabic souk. Some of the key technical features of the project involved:
-
Extensive use of pre-cast concrete elements to ensure construction programme was achieved
-
Widespread use of post-tensioned concrete for long span beams
-
An energy centre for the development with a 56MVA power supply
-
A cooling plant providing 45MW of cooling
-
Heat reclaim on central fresh air extract/plant
-
A centralised 40,000 l LPG storage facility
-
Circular ring services distribution
