Mott MacDonald has acquired American consultancy firm Careba Power Engineers based in Westwood, Massachusetts. Formed in 2001 Careba has around 50 staff and a turnover of nearly US$7 million. To be known as Careba Mott MacDonald, the new company will join Mott MacDonald’s North American energy team based in Boston working on a range of electrical transmission and distribution projects.
Careba has extensive experience in the engineering and design of major power generation projects – including wind power, biomass, biodiesel and coal fired plants – plus distribution and transmission projects for power plant operators, power plant developers, industrial facility operators, equipment manufacturers, contractors and power distribution utilities. Its main market is mainland USA but it has undertaken some projects in the Middle East and Japan.
Both companies believe that uniting the complementary skills and resources of the two businesses will bring benefits and enhance the service they offer to their respective customers. “Bringing Careba Power Engineers on board will enable us to establish a strong bridgehead in North America’s power sector helping us to expand our energy business there alongside our existing North American company Hatch Mott MacDonald, which operates in transportation and water," said Mott MacDonald chairman Mike Blackburn.
Larry Sullivan, Careba Power Engineers principal, is delighted that the company is joining the Mott MacDonald Group. “With the backing of a financially strong partner, we will be able to expand faster than we could on our own, bringing considerable benefits to our customers and our staff,” he said. “For our customers it will mean we will be able to offer a total project capability drawing on the complementary skills of the wider Group. For our staff it will bring opportunities to work on a more diverse range of projects both in the USA and elsewhere in the world.”
