Mott MacDonald HOK Sport consortium appointed to design new stadium at Maze/Long Kesh site

Mott MacDonald and HOK Sport have been appointed to design a new multi-sports stadium at the Maze/Long Kesh site in Northern Ireland. The Minister for the development of the former prison complex, David Hanson MP, revealed the winning consortium at a press conference held in Belfast on 22 January.

The proposed stadium will bring together Gaelic athletics, soccer and rugby in one world-class 21st century shared facility, bringing all communities together and putting Northern Ireland on the map for hosting major international sporting, musical and other high profile events. The aim is to develop an active, dynamic and vibrant destination offering a comprehensive range of facilities and well integrated with its surroundings with an overall commitment to sustainable development objectives. The regeneration and transformation of the site will take place within a distinctive setting of attractive new buildings, quality public realm and new public spaces.

Speaking at the announcement Mr Hanson said: Mott MacDonald and HOK Sport have established international reputations for stadium design. This project will bring together the consortium’s expertise and the local knowledge from the three sports, all three of which have representatives on the design group. I have no doubt the result of that collaboration will be an exciting and world class stadium.”

As lead consultant Mott MacDonald will provide the overall project management of the stadium plus civil, structural and building services engineering as well as cost management services from its cost consultancy Franklin + Andrews. HOK Sport will lead the architectural design of the new facility.

Commenting on the appointment Mott MacDonald’s project manager Bill Dowey said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to design this exciting stadium. Having worked on a number of major stadia around the world, Mott MacDonald not only brings world-class experience to the project design but, having been established in Belfast for over 50 years, offers local delivery. “

John Barrow for HOK Sport added: “Northern Ireland has a great future ahead. HOK Sport is proud to be part of that vision. We are in the business of creating outstanding buildings, and the new stadium will be a world class history-making facility for all. On a personal note, I came to love Northern Ireland during my involvement in the Odyssey Arena, and I look forward to working in Northern Ireland again on this wonderful landmark project.”
