Mott MacDonald appointed to design Delhi bus systems

Mott MacDonald’s India office has been appointed to provide consultancy services for the design of two bus rapid transit corridors for Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMMTS – an enterprise of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi). These new projects are part of the Government’s bus rapid transit systems (BRTS) programme estimated to be worth over £25m and through which it aims to improve the City’s environment by enhancing the efficiency and attractiveness of its public transport infrastructure.

DIMMTS explains, “Being at the backbone of the Delhi transport system and serving half of passenger demand, Delhi’s current bus systems are lacking an exclusive road based infrastructure and all the benefits of operational planning. BRTS is an important step forward to overcome these issues and will act as a primary feeder system for metro users as well as a reliable, alternative and affordable transport system for Delhi’s public. In the long run, it will reduce the growth rate of the use of private modes of transport, which will have an immense positive impact on both the volume of traffic and physical environment.”

Mott MacDonald’s project team will be responsible for consultancy services for the design of the 11 km Rajendranagar to Pragati Maidan and 16km Kondli to Gokalpuri corridors. Their remit covers preparation of operational and conceptual engineering plans as well as environmental, economic and financial analysis and traffic forecasting, in addition to an implementation strategy for delivering the designs. Their reports are due for completion by September 2007.

Sunmeet Singh, Mott MacDonald’s project manager said, “We are delighted to be selected by DIMMTS for this exciting programme. Mott MacDonald India has a wealth of transportation consultancy expertise and we look forward to demonstrating our skills on this prestigious initiative. Being part of a global company, we have experts conversant with leading edge traffic simulation and modelling software which will be employed to help meet the current and future needs of the City.”
