ICE Mentor of the Year

Mott MacDonald employee Richard McGowan, from the company's buildings and infrastructure team in Glasgow, received the Institution of Civil Engineer’s Mentor of the Year Award organised by GSNet (the Graduate and Students Network). The award recognises the vital contribution made by those who encourage others to meet their personal and professional goals.

Richard was nominated by Divisional Director, Andy Girvan and mentees from Mott MacDonald - Lorraine Hutchison, Duncan Scott, Fiona Savage and Duncan Hutchison - as well as two mentees from other companies - Nina Rooke from Entec UK and Graeme Greer, a graduate at Jacobs.

Graeme commented in the submission, "I have worked with Richard in a partnership of consulting engineers for the last two years. As Richard works for another consultant he has no direct responsibility for training me, however at every opportunity Richard will go out of his way to assist and encourage me in my development as a civil engineer."

Lorraine Hutchison a Mott MacDonald graduate, who supported Richard at the question and answer session for the judges to select the winner, added, "Richard is always willing to give up time for graduates, whether this is in relation to ICE mentoring or general day to day staff development within Mott MacDonald. His interest in staff/graduate development extends far beyond the graduates that he is an official mentor for; he takes a keen interest in the mentoring of all graduates. Richard has a very keen interest in helping graduates to develop and identifying potential for this in the projects they are working on."

Andy Girvan, explained why he felt Richard deserves the award, "He is genuinely interested in the development of staff rather than the process of doing it. He has more than just an understanding of what learning and development can do for individuals, organisations and society. He has lived this process through the transfer of skills and knowledge to the developing world and in areas of disaster relief - Bangladesh and Montserrat."

On hearing that he had won the award, Richard said, "It is great to win an award for something that is for me the most enjoyable part of my job."

Keith Howells, Mott MacDonald's Managing Director said, "Providing rewarding, long-term careers for our talented staff is very important. Clearly, learning and development plays a significant part in this, Richard McGowan embodies our beliefs in staff development and we are very proud that he has won this award."
