Haverfordwest Creamery’s site utilised two evaporators to concentrate whey resulting from its cheese making process to 22% total solids (TS). We managed the replacement of a multi-effect evaporator with a reverse osmosis (RO) system to achieve 12% TS and the upgrade of the second evaporator to achieve the 12% - 22% stage of concentration. The recovery of RO permeate for use as process water and reduced plant steam consumption yielded savings of £400,000 per annum.
New cheese room
Existing cheese vats were incurring high maintenance costs, offered poor reliability and poor yield. We managed their replacement with new TetraPak OST® vats which improved fat recovery from 85% to 97%. For the duration of the project cheese manufacturing continued at the facility while all around the floors, walls, ceilings, electrics and ventilation systems were upgraded to prepare for the new installation. The works were completed on time and within budget without losing a day’s planned production.
