Designed and constructed with the aid of ground-breaking geotechnical analysis and modelling techniques, caverns for one of the world’s first nuclear waste repositories have been developed at Bátaapáti, Hungary.
We provided tunnel design for contractor Mecsekérc Zrt. Exceptionally stringent safety criteria were applied.
Our design involved award-winning research into the type and character of the rock and testing of actual against predicted performance. To achieve an economic solution while meeting the highest technical and performance standards, we employed an empirical approach to tunnel design - adapting our design to the rock conditions.
We used sophisticated computer models to analyse the large span caverns and complex tunnel junctions. Combined with rarely performed physical testing, this allowed the design of all structures to be optimised.
