Mott MacDonald director Don Moore honoured with Chinese ‘Friendship Award’

Don Moore, a Mott MacDonald director based in China, has been honoured with a prestigious ‘Friendship Award’ for his contribution to water resource management projects in the country. The award was presented at a special ceremony attended by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, on the 29th September 2008.

The ‘Friendship Award’ is the supreme award given by the Chinese government to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China’s economic and social progress. Only 850 foreign experts from 55 countries worldwide have received the award since 1991.

Congratulating the award-winners Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang expressed his heartfelt gratitude for their efforts which are considered "indispensable" to China's modernisation*.

Don has over 30 years of experience with Mott MacDonald in delivering water sector development and management projects across the world. He was nominated by China’s Ministry of Water Resources for the positive impact he has made on the management of the country’s water resources.

Speaking after the ceremony Don Moore said “I am truly honoured to receive this prestigious award, it's one of the highlights of my career working in the water resource sector. I have been fortunate to have worked on really interesting projects in China over the last 20 years and developed many special working relationships in Beijing and in the provinces of Gansu and Liaoning.”

High-profile projects Don has worked on in China include providing assistance to the Ministry of Water Resources with the review of the 1988 Water Law, and the development of recommendations, based on international best practice, for the formulation of the new Water Law that was passed in October 2002.

More recently Don was the advisory team leader on the Water Resources Demand Management Assistance Project (WRDMAP), providing planning guidance in the provinces of Gansu and Liaoning based on the reforms required by the 2002 Chinese Water Law.

Don also directed the Songhua River Flood Management Study in China, developing a comprehensive flood management support system for the Songliao Water Resources Commission.
