We were responsible for developing a concept desalination process design for the South Australian state government. Specific responsibilities included:
- Raw seawater quality assessment
- Product water quality assessment
- Plant production capacity, availability and operations
- Pre-treatment and treatment requirements
- Chemical treatment and reverse osmosis plant process
- Reverse osmosis train configuration
- Energy recovery potential
- Recommendations for membrane clean-in-place
- Post-treatment process
- Potable water disinfection
- Backwash water treatment and sludge handling system
- Process and instrumentation diagrams
- Outline site layouts and conceptual general arrangements
- Three major pumping installations at the intake, pre-reverse osmosis membrane plant and the forwarding pump stations
- Process pumps and pipelines
- Electrical, controls and instrumentation, civil, mechanical and structural requirements of the plant
- Review of pilot plant testing programme
An innovative feature of our design was our consideration of hydropower generation on the reject stream from the desalination plant.
Following completion of the concept design we prepared the technical requirements for the proposal documents.
