Mott MacDonald assists on the Gateway Towers and Car Park Podium, Dubai

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Nakheel to provide technical and site assurance services on the new Gateway Towers and Car Park Podium which forms the approach to Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

The new development has been planned to comprise a 14 storey podium, approximately 290m by 90m, which will house the Gateway Station – a terminus station with workshops for the monorail which runs the length of the trunk of The Palm to the prime attraction at the crescent end of the development, Atlantis. The podium also houses a multi-storey car park on 12 floors for 5000 spaces – the largest of its kind in the region – together with luxury accommodation, food and retail outlets. Above the podium will be three towers rising another 35 to 44 floors, the tallest reaching up to 260m. One tower will house luxury residential apartments and the other two will be office space, one of which will house Dubai World, Nakheel’s holding company.

The Podium phase of the development is being carried out under a Design and Build contract by Taisei Corporation. Mott MacDonald’s project team is providing technical and site assurance services, reviewing the proposals by the contractor for compliance with the Employers Requirements and current technical and building regulation together with on-site assurance, planning and health and safety advice.

Rod Williams, Mott MacDonald’s project manager said, “There is a very challenging timescale, the Station is due to be open in April 2009 to meet contractual requirements of Atlantis. A further challenge is that the design of the Podium, which houses the station as an isolated box - the interior of which is being completed by the monorail contractor - is being developed as the project proceeds.”

The Towers are due for completion by 2011. The total capital value of the project is estimated to be around 2.5 billion AED.

Rod continued, “Mott MacDonald is working with Nakheel on several projects, most notably the engineering and site assurance of the Palm Jumeirah monorail and providing project management for the Jumeirah Golf Estates. We’re absolutely delighted to be selected to assist with the Gateway Towers project as well.”
