Opportunity
A series of challenges in procuring projects is preventing the uptake of solar technologies in Africa, while high proportions of the continent’s population are without secure access to electricity.
Solution
As technical advisor to the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, we helped draft a standard package of project documents for the scaling solar initiative, including the power purchase agreement (PPA), government support agreement and request for proposals (RfPs). The scaling solar framework also includes a suite of technical assistance, pre-approved financing, insurance products and guarantees that allow emerging markets to unlock their solar potential.
Outcome
The scheme is being rolled out across Sub-Saharan Africa, providing more opportunities for solar power where it is most needed. It has quickly become a market standard for the procurement of solar energy projects in Africa. Zambia, Senegal and Madagascar are the first countries to implement the initiative, with more countries expected to follow soon.
