In 2016, Mott MacDonald were tasked with a huge challenge. This project set by Water UK was to provide a strategic review of the water resources of England and Wales over the next 50 years.
Finding a solution for this project was not easy. This was due to significant challenges and uncertainties, such as an increasing population and changing economy and climate, that put significant pressure on water resources, this therefore required innovative solutions to balance the supply and demand for water.
This meant we had to use the nationally consistent assumptions to the supply and demand forecasts of 110 Water Resource Zones, this then created 12 scenarios across population growth, abstraction licence reform and climate change across three levels of service.
As a result of our review, there was widespread stakeholder engagement across UK water companies, as well as the identification of new, cost effective, strategic transfers of water and new storage options.
