Opportunity
Supporting the Cypriot government in following the Natura 2000 guidelines involved leading a comprehensive conservation study to determine potential impact of the development on the delicate marine life and habitats.
Solution
Our role for the Cypriot government included studying and redrafting an official response to the EU's communication of opposition, a review of the existing environmental impact assessment documents, and an appropriate assessment to help respond back to concerns about the protection of sensitive marine species in the area raised by the European Commission and technical advisors.
Outcome
We provided a clear assessment to show how the marine ecosystem could be affected, combining informed data and observations with the opinions and observations of the Bern convention committee and technical witness reports. Our client gained the appropriate methodologies, techniques and support to complete an environmental impact assessment to the standards of the EU.
