In the face of competition from Liverpool and international bidders, England’s second city decided to focus instead on a 2022 bid.
Working to a tight timescale, our multidisciplinary team supported the bid committee and wider stakeholders to help the city shape its vision for the games, which is to celebrate diversity, create opportunities and drive business links.
The feasibility, evaluation and candidature file stages of the bid process called on our expertise in transport planning, legacy planning, cost consultancy, geographic information systems, masterplanning and overlay. We undertook a number of technical and financial feasibility studies, and supported evaluation visits to several of the proposed venues.
Following a comprehensive evaluation process, Birmingham was confirmed as the UK’s nominated host city. In December 2017 it was officially awarded the 2022 Commonwealth Games by the Commonwealth Games Federation.
