Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has won the prestigious Linda Grant Health & Safety Award at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) awards for Yorkshire and Humberside.
Following a rigorous judging phase involving written submissions and presentations, the hard work of the team was rewarded at a ceremony at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
Assessors from CECA and the Yorkshire Safety Centre were looking for a project that delivered innovation, workforce involvement, client participation, public interaction and a first-class incident rate. Our remediation work on the Leeds Low Level Syphons did just that.
The project saw us remove existing metalwork and provide safe access and monitoring arrangements to enable the cleaning of five inverted syphons that convey combined sewage flows from the city of Leeds beneath the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal.
Non-entry and full-BA confined space entry methods used to clean the brick culverts, in close liaison with Canal and Rivers Trust and the contractor delivering the nearby Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme.
Now complete, the project has established a safe methodology for our client Yorkshire Water to carry out future maintenance of the asset.
Tom Lewis, Operations Manager for MMB, told us, "The works were carried out in a potentially high-risk confined space, and showed MMB at its best through collaboration both internally, with our client, and with our supply chain in planning and design to ensure risks were mitigated to the lowest possible levels. This engagement, attention to detail and focus on safety continued into the delivery phase.
"The quality of the near miss reporting and commitment to the continuous review and improvement of the safe systems of work was first class and ensured that complacency was not allowed to develop during the near 20,000 hours worked to successfully complete the project."
This is the third time in the last seven years that MMB has won this much sought-after award, demonstrating how health and safety remains at the core of our business. Our vision is to achieve zero injuries and prevent occupational ill-health – something we will only achieve with the involvement and care of everyone involved in our projects.
