Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and JBA Bentley have been recognised for engineering excellence in two categories at the recent Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Awards in Yorkshire and Humber.
The annual ceremony was held at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate, with guest of honour, ICE President, Professor Lord Robert Mair on hand to present the awards.
MMB - a joint venture between engineering and construction company JN Bentley and global consulting giant Mott MacDonald – received recognition for the construction of a new spillway at Gouthwaite Reservoir. JBA Bentley – JN Bentley’s joint venture with environmental engineering specialists Jeremy Benn Associates – picked up a certificate for flood defence modifications made in Hensall, North Yorkshire.
Certificate of Excellence: Gouthwaite Reservoir Spillway
The construction of a new spillway at Gouthwaite Reservoir has maintained the safety of the structure, which represents the largest dammed catchment in Yorkshire. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the project has ensured the integrity of this exemplary piece of Victorian engineering has been preserved whilst updating site to current standards of safety.
Certificate of Commendation: Hensall Barrier Bank Modifications
The effects of up to 2m of mining subsidence on flood defences protecting more than 500 homes in Hensall and the surrounding area have been mitigated by our solution that maintained existing flood defence height whilst the ground was subsiding.
Operations Director, Nick Lister, said, "Well done to everyone involved in the two projects recognised by the ICE.
"Both schemes represent just what we’re good at as a business – solving engineering problems safely and cost-effectively in close collaboration with our clients. The certificates are achievements to be proud of, and reward for the hard work and efforts of the teams."
Recognition at this year’s ceremony continues a proud tradition at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards: in recent years we have picked up the Smeaton Award for improvements made to the Grade II listed Butterley Spillway, and the Centenary Award for the construction of new manganese contactors at Rivelin Water Treatment Works near Sheffield.
