BMB Mott MacDonald wins prestigious economic recovery project in Aceh, Indonesia

BMB Mott MacDonald has been awarded a technical assistance contract by the World Bank to coordinate the economic recovery process of the Aceh and Nias province in Indonesia to help regenerate the area following the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in the region. The project is to channel a multi donor grant fund of $50 million towards projects aimed at income generation and employment creation.

BMB Mott MacDonald will support the State Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of the government of the Aceh province in helping to identify and manage suitable economic development projects which will be financed through the Economic Development Finance Facility (EDFF) Grant Fund. As the Executing Agency, the national development planning agency of Indonesia (BAPPENAS) is supporting this project through their strong expertise in planning and evaluation.

The initial task will be to develop selection criteria for selecting the projects that will be financed through EDFF. A total of 125 applications have already been submitted with proposals ranging from fish processing, palm oil production, and general agriculture to other small enterprise development. It is anticipated that the successful proposals will be selected and receive confirmation of financing by December 2009.

A further important role for BMB Mott MacDonald will be to help strengthen the capacity of local and regional authorities in managing considerable donor funds while introducing modern, transparent business ethics and procedures and integrity guidelines.

Geert van Boekel, BMB Mott MacDonald’s project manager said, “We are proud that we have been given this challenging task that will allow BMB Mott MacDonald to be part of this important reconstruction process. It is estimated that more than 5000 people will find temporary or permanent work as a direct consequence of our project.”
